On Tuesday, March 21st, DeSales students in grades 5, 6 & 7 had an opportunity to take part in Bake for Good (Kids). This program was sponsored by King Arthur Flour. King Arthur Flour Instructor, Ms. Amy Driscoll, with the help of her two students assistants taught the students how to make bread, cinnamon buns, pretzels and bread sticks.
Baking is an ideal vehicle for STREAM learning. Through these experiences in the kitchen, children learn critical thinking skills, understand more about measurements, they witness chemical reactions, can exercise their creativity and of course problem solve. These experiences all put STREAM in real world contexts.
Students will be bringing home a bag from King Arthur Flour with a recipe book, yeast, 2 small bags of flour, a dough tool and a plastic bag. From these materials, they will be able to make two loaves of bread. One loaf for their family to enjoy and the second loaf will be made for St. John's Outreach Center (students were asked to bring them to school Monday).
A very special thank you to Ms. Amy Driscoll and King Arthur Flour for spending the morning with us.
