DeSales Teacher Named District VFW Teacher of the Year
Lockport, NY – DeSales Middle School Social Studies Teacher, Mrs. Lori Asher has been recognized by the VFW Post 2535 as the recipient of the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award winner. VFW Commander, Roger Cordle congratulated Asher on winning the honor on both the local Post-level and the District-level.
This award recognizes the top classroom teachers who teach citizenship and promote America’s history and traditions. Asher recently invited guest speakers into her classroom including a Vietnam Veteran and a woman who during WWII could be best described as a Rosie the Riveter. Matthew Schaffert, a former student of Mrs. Asher described the influence she had on him during his 8th grade year; “Mrs. Asher was emotional talking about the grandmother that was coming to speak about her role in World War II when she helped build the planes. That made me realize how important the role this woman played was and to treat her with great respect.”
DeSales Principal, Mrs. Karen Rahill commended Asher saying; “Mrs. Asher makes Social Studies come alive for middle school students at DeSales Catholic School. She has a love and passion for history and her country that her students embrace and respond to. There is always something exciting happening in her room.”
