DeSales Catholic School in Lockport is hosting its eighth annual “Race for Fitness” on Saturday, May 7th 2016. The Race for Fitness, sponsored by Niagara Produce, Murphy Insurance, Summit Marketing and Tops Friendly Markets, is open to the entire community and features activities for all ages and abilities. Walkers and runners can participate in a 5K, one-mile and kids dash event.
Dedicated in the memory of Tim Chesko, a long time fitness advocate who passed away in 2008, the Race for Fitness began eight years ago and has drawn more than fourteen hundred runners and walkers to the area. The goal of the DeSales Race for Fitness is to call attention to the important role that families play in developing good fitness habits that last a lifetime.
“It has never been more important for all of us as a community to come together and recognize the importance of family focused health and wellness.” said Greg Wilson, Physical Education and Health instructor and Athletic Director at DeSales Catholic School. “I see it every day. Kids today watch a lot TV and spend a lot of time every day playing video games. Families seem to be on the run and have a tough time eating in a healthy way.” Some research shows that 91 percent of U.S. children ages 2-17 play video games (64 million) and that kids may spend as much as 5 or more hours per day in front of a TV or video game. Health experts agree that parents have a strong influence on how children develop healthy habits. “When parents are not active or are overweight, their kids tend to follow suit.” Wilson says.
The DeSales Race for Fitness will include a post-race party, and awards and prizes for all ages. There will be split-club raffles, food and beverages and t-shirt sales as well.
“People love the vibe of this event because there is something for the whole family. We put together a great race bag loaded with healthy goodies from Niagara Produce and Tops provides food and refreshments at the post race party. There are prizes for top finishers in all age groups and we will now have Tech t-shirts for the 1 mile walk/run as well as the 5k.” said Jennifer Murphy, race director for the Race for Fitness.

Adult 5K $20 pre-registration/$25 day of registration
Adult 1 mile walk/run $15 pre-registration/$15 day of registration
Kids 14 & under 5K $10 pre-registration/$10 day of registration
Kids 14 & under 1 mile walk/run $5 pre-registration and day of registration
Kids dash (FREE, ages 8 and under)
5K and 1 mile participants will receive a FREE Tech t-shirt.
Kids dash participants will receive a commemorative ribbon or medal.
Additional shirts may be on sale at the event.
Any proceeds generated from this event will benefit the DeSales Home School Association.
